Kinngait Studios and their relationship with Tamarind Institute

Tamarind Institute

If you Google Tamarind Institute you’ll discover all the historical and current programs offered. Basically it the The Julliard School for young (and older) lithographers wishing to sharpen their skills post university training. Only eight applicants are chosen from the many that apply. University Art Programs often offer printmaking training as part of their curriculum, some Universities are known for their specific expertise and students will gravitate to those places to learn from skilled instructors, some graduates from the Tamarind Institute.

Tamarind offers two distinct programs for the educational program, the Printer Training Program and the Master Printer Program. Students enter the PTP (as it is affectionately known) often with the hopes to be chosen, by staff, for the second year TMP. They also offer a month long summer program specifically about plate lithography taught by the director of education.

Wally Brennan, Kinngait’s first lithography manager graduated from the PTP, I succeeded Wally and I graduated from the Tamarind PTP 1994-95 and Rob Harmer graduated from the Tamarind PTP as well. A long line of relationships with the Tamarind Institute and the Kinngait Studios has assured that the lithography aspect of Kinngait Studios is as current as it can be.The philosophies of the Tamarind Institute have guided the core principles of the contemporary art practices at Kinngait Studios…..for the most part.

Visiting print makers Bob Rogers TMP, Jill Graham TMP and Jeff Sipple TMP (PTP instructor) have all given workshops at Kinngait Studio. The visiting artist/print maker programs inject new life and techniques into the studios which is reflected in the very nature of the print program.

For the very first time in Kinngait history Niveaksie Quvianaqtuliaq the senior printer at Kinngait attended the summer plate workshop at Tamarind 2022. Along with Niv went Audrey Fraser Hurd, the current Studio manager. It took a lot of effort to move people from Cape Dorset to Albuquerque  New Mexico, a big shout out to Will Huffman of the West Baffin Co-op. who made that happen.
